How well we have lived

How well we have loved

How well we have learned to let go"

R.E.A.C.H. Yoga with the Detroit Lions!

On Sunday, October 5 2014 the R.E.A.C.H. Yoga program, in partnership with Sabrina Mayhew of theAngel Pillow Project & YBD Foundation, offered yoga (with instruction by Katherine Schaefer) on Ford Field to 120 Breast Cancer Survivors followed by a night of football dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness.

We currently offer classes for R.E.A.C.H yoga at Karma Yoga on Monday afternoons. We hope to expand the program to multiple locations in the future.

Sabrina Mayhew, a breast cancer survivor, is the wife of Martin Mayhew, the General Manager of the Detroit Lions. Sabrina Mayhew created The Angel Pillow Project to encourage healing, offer support and provide comfort to fellow breast cancer patients and survivors.

Reach Yoga Has been extended!

On Monday June 9, 2014 REACH YOGA began and since then Karma Yoga in Bloomfield Hills has become a safe haven for those that have been affected by breast cancer. The participants range from those that have never experienced yoga to seasoned practitioners, a physical therapist and a yoga teacher. Some women are a few years past their treatment and some are still in the process of treatment and follow up reconstructive surgeries.  One young mother is going through chemotherapy and having some complications that have put her back in the hospital with an infection. Several have had mastectomies and reconstructive surgery. A few are experiencing neuropathy.

The classes include meditation, breathing exercises, self massage techniques, yoga poses and creative movement. Before and after each class the participants check in with their feelings using a feelings chart. So far the after chart shows that 100% of the time the women are feeling more positive after the class. We laugh and play we move and we support each other.

One woman was so happy to be able to balance on one foot which was something she wasn’t even able to accomplish before she got cancer. She raves about the class all the time.

The physical therapist is discovering a healing process that doesn’t require pain! She told me that in her profession they just expect therapy to be painful. We are working on her backing off  before she gets to the point of experiencing physical pain. She even brought her teenage niece who had never done yoga with her one time.

The first series ran for 8 weeks and we had a core group of 6-8 people returning to class each week. We are now in the second 8 week series and hope to continue indefinitely.
